Zorki-4 is a 35 mm rangefinder camera produced by Krasnogorsky Mekhanichesky Zavod (KMZ) in the vicinity of Moscow, in the former USSR, from 1956 to 1973. The name "Zorkiy" translates to "Sharp Sight." Among the Zorki series, the Zorki-4 stands out as the most widely recognized model. It was also the first Zorki camera to see significant export to Western markets.
Specifications include:
- Lens: Jupiter-8
- Focusing: Achieved by aligning yellow rangefinder images in the viewfinder, with a depth of field scale on the lens
- Shutter: Features a horizontal traveling focal plane with a rubberized silk double cloth curtain, offering speeds from 1 to 1/1000 seconds plus a bulb setting, controlled via a dial on the top plate
- Viewfinder: A coupled viewfinder/rangefinder that is large and bright, with a diopter adjustment lever located beneath the rewind knob
- Take-up spool: Special design, not captive, equipped with a small pin for attaching film perforations
- Engravings: The back of the top plate displays the KMZ logo and the serial number
- Body: Constructed from metallic cast aluminum, weighing 687 grams
As with other Soviet-era rangefinders, the shutter speed selector rotates upon shutter release and should only be adjusted after the shutter has been cocked. Changing the shutter speed without first cocking the shutter may result in damage to the setting pin when advancing the film.
