Zenit (Russian: Зени́т) is a camera brand originating from the Soviet Union, produced by KMZ in Krasnogorsk, near Moscow, since 1952, and later by BelOMO in Belarus starting in the 1970s. The Zenit brand is primarily known for its 35 mm SLR cameras.
The Zenit TTL is a 35mm film SLR camera manufactured by KMZ from 1977 to 1985, with a total production of 1,632,212 units. Additionally, it was produced by MMZ (BelOMO) between 1980 and 1982, totaling 1,000,000 units. This model is part of the enduring Zenit series.
This camera serves as an enhanced version of the Zenit EM, featuring stop-down TTL metering and a rewind crank instead of a knob. The light meter is not sensitive to voltage variations and operates effectively with a 1.5-volt alkaline battery.
Lens Helios
The Helios-44 is among the most widely produced Soviet SLR lenses, characterized by a 58mm f/2 aperture.
It is fundamentally a clone of the Zeiss Biotar, which was a fast normal lens designed for the Exakta mount. The Helios-44 was initially designed for the Zenit m39 mount and later adapted for the m42 mount, among others. Early models feature a 13-blade diaphragm, while subsequent versions have 8 or 6 blades.
As a Biotar replica, it employs a modified Double Gauss design consisting of two groups of three elements each, which are relatively symmetric and well-corrected for optical aberrations. This design places it within a category of commonly used SLR normal lenses.
